Movie of the Month: February's Invaded by Parasite.

Writer's picture: Caroline ElseyCaroline Elsey

Bong Joon-ho creates new meaning of the word 'Parasite' in his film. Winning Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best International Feature Film at the Oscars helped to credit this movie for the praise it deserved and now is your chance to be a part of history by seeing it too.

Parasite's main themes dwell on the concepts of greed and class discrimination within South Korea. Unquestionably this movie is beyond its time, creating twists and turns you'd never be able to predict as well as treating your eyes to gorgeously authentic scenery and camera work. Joon-ho has done other films about class but this may be his most damning observation yet.

“That's why people shouldn't make plans. With no plan, nothing can go wrong and if something spins out of control, it doesn't matter."

The premise of this movie focuses around a low income family in South Korea who get creative to make their income. When a scenario presents itself for the family to gain more financial stability they devise a plan to infiltrate the wealthy Park family but end up with more complications than they all bargained for.

Reason's I Loved this Movie

I hate subtitles. HATE THEM! But- I found them manageable with this film! Sure, its a movie that will keep you reading the bottom of the screen -if you don't speak Korean- but there's a special re-watchability to it that will help you make connections and further drive you to fall in love with the story. I highly recommend renting it and watching it twice to really grasp it. Yes, this may sound like a chore but once you've dived in you won't want to stop watching until you've figured out all the little subliminal themes and messages hidden within the story.

The clever characters, the beautiful shots and witty dialogue. Everything about this movie is exceptional in my eyes and its all done with deliverance and meaning. Initially it is a slow start and seems like you'd be able to predict how it ends but director Joon-ho proves only he is the keeper to this story's ending. The characters also have their share of complications, you're never quite sure who you should be rooting for since they all have flaws.

Not only did this film make history with its win at the Oscars but it is historically important during this time, especially within South Korea, where this story takes place. It tells an abstract fairytale of the poor and rich and how social standings and struggles can force someone's hand and ultimately lead them down a road they didn't intend to ever step foot on to begin with.

Parasite is still available to see in theaters (check areas near you to be sure) but also available on sites like Amazon video for purchase or rental. Check out the trailer below.
